Dawn redwoods once blanketed the entire Northern Hemisphere and were thought to have been extinct for millions of years until their rediscovery in 1941 by a Chinese forester in a remote corner of the Sichuan (at the time, Szechuan) Province in south-central China. Being the sole living species of the genus Metasequoia, it is considered Critically Endangered.
This dawn redwood can be found at Madronia Cemetery. Take a hard left as you enter the cemetery gates. Follow the road until you come to the main office building. Across the street is a small shelter where flower vases are kept. The dawn redwood encroaches on the road and provides shade for this shelter.
