Text:

Bridges’ Battery, Illinois Light Artillery
2 Napoleons, 4 3” Riffles
Beatty’s Brigade, Negley’s Division, Thomas’ Corps.
September 20, 1863

Capt. Lyman Bridges, Commanding.
1st Lieut. William Bishop (Killed).
1st Lieut. Morris D. Temple.
2d Lieut. Lyman A. White.
2d Lieut. Franklin Seborn.

On September 19 this battery was engaged for several hours with the
enemy's artillery at Glass’ Mill. Later moved with the brigade via Crawfish
Spring to the Dyer field and bivouac. On the 20th at 8 A.M. reached
this position from which about 9:30 A.M. it opened fire upon the enemy then
appearing in the woods and open field some 400 yards to the northeast.

After a fight, brief but desperate, the battery being attacked in front
and flank, it was obliged to retire with the loss of two guns, one cassion,
three limbers and 22 horses disabled. Lieuts. Temple and Seaborn, with four
guns, then reported to Gen. Negley on Snodgrass Hill where they were
soon afterwards joining by the captain, who, with the help of an infantry
detachment, had hauled off for guns, abandoned by other batteries. The
battery retired soon after noon under Gen. Negley's orders to Rossville,
where it bivouacked. Total casualties: killed; 1 officer, 5 enlisted men;
wounded, 16 enlisted men; missing, 4 enlisted men. Lost: 2 guns, 1 caisson, 3
limbers. Horses killed 46.

Note
Trailhead Graphics, Inc. has produced a map of the Chickamauga Battlefield showing the locations of all of the monuments and the markers on the battlefield. Each location on the map has a number associated with it that cross-references to an index on the back of the map that has the name of the marker (called the Chick-Chatt NMP monument numbering system). This number corresponds to the structure Number listed on the NPS List of Classified Structures that is normally prefixed with the letters MT for the Chickamauga Battlefield.
