The main features of the 17th and 18th centuries are the Flemish and Dutch schools (e.g. Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt, Jan Brueghel the Elder), German and Dutch still life painting. Key works from the 19th century include the Impressionists represented by Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne as well as the paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Switzerland’s Arnold Böcklin and Ferdinand Hodler. In the 20th century, the focus is on works of Cubism with Picasso, Braque and Juan Gris. Expressionism is represented by such figures as Edvard Munch, Franz Marc, Oskar Kokoschka and Emil Nolde. The collection also includes works of art from the periods of Constructivism, Dadaism and Surrealism and American art since 1950. Further highlights are the unique compilations of works from Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Paul Klee, Alberto Giacometti and Marc Chagall.

DE: "Das Kunstmuseum Basel beherbergt die grösste und bedeutendste öffentlich zugängliche Kunstsammlung der Schweiz. Mit seinen Schwerpunkten zählt es auch international zu den wichtigsten Museen seiner Art. Geplant und umgesetzt wurde das neoklassizistische Museumsgebäude 1931 bis 1936 von Paul Bonatz und R. Christ. Das Museum liegt neben dem ehemaligen Gebäude der Schweizerischen Nationalbank am St. Alban-Graben in Basel.

Das Kunstmuseum besitzt die grösste Sammlung der Welt von Arbeiten der Holbein-Familie. Vor allem die älteren Bestände des Museums gehen auf den Basler Sammler Basilius Amerbach (1533–1591) zurück, dessen Vater Bonifacius unter anderem mit dem Humanisten Erasmus von Rotterdam und dem Maler Hans Holbein befreundet war. 1661 hat die Stadt die Privatsammlung erworben. Das sogenannte Amerbach-Kabinett war eines der ersten Museen, die im Besitz eines städtischen Gemeinwesens standen.

Die Amerbachsammlung war 1671–1849 im Haus zur Mücke untergebracht und ein Teil der Universitätsbibliothek. 1849 zog sie in das Museum an der Augustinergasse (heute Naturhistorisches Museum Basel). Raumnot führte dazu, dass die Kunstsammlung 1922 im «Augustinerhof» an der Augustinergasse (Kupferstichkabinett) und im «Bachofenhaus» am Münsterplatz (Sammlung Bachofen mit weiteren Beständen) Filialen erhielt und 1928 mit ihrem Hauptteil in der Kunsthalle ein vorläufiges Domizil fand. Seit 1936 hat die Kunstsammlung ihr Domizil im damals eröffneten Kunstmuseum, dessen Bau- und Planungszeit rund drei Jahrzehnte in Anspruch nahm." (Wikipedia)
