Johnston was a soldier's soldier. He fought in the Texas Army during the fight for independence from Mexico. He graduated from West Point and was in the Union Army before the start of the Civil War, and then joined the Confederate Army when the Civil War began. Unfortunately for the South, Johnston was killed early in the Civil War, at the Battle of Shiloh, making him the highest ranking officer to die in action on either side.
This sculpted statue of Albert Sidney Johnston is located between Parlin and Calhoon Halls in the South Mall area of the University of Texas campus. It is one of six statues that were originally designed to be part of the nearby Littlefield Fountain, but changes to the final design caused this and other sculptures to be distributed throughout the landscape of the campus.
This 8 foot tall statue of General Albert Sidney Johnston portrays him turning slightly to his right. The general has a full moustache and beard and wears a long uniform double-breasted coat with belt, boots and gauntlet gloves. He holds a hat in his right hand, with his left hand resting on a sword which hangs from his belt. The sculpture is mounted upon a red granite base.
The inscriptions on the statue and the base are as follows:
