In Milton, along Canton Street, is the center of town, with two clapboard churches - the western one being the First Parish Church in Milton, Unitarian-Universalist.

The church is visible from both Canton Avenue and Thacher Street. Be sure that you are at the right church - this is the western one of two. This church has two floors of windows on all sides, and has an ornate but short steeple. The belfry is open on all sides, and there are clock faces below. The church is at one end of a U-shaped arrangement of buildings, which ends at a miniature replica of the building - used as the Sunday School.

The history of the congregation goes back to Pilgrim and Puritan times. The town of Milton was incorporated from Dorchester in 1662. In 1680, the congregation had its first permanent minister, Peter Thacher. The third meeting house building was built near this site in 1728. This building was built in 1787 and dedicated in 1788. The date is based on the building of the structure. In 1834, disputes between more Calvinist theology concepts and more liberal concepts caused a split in the congregation. One part became the Congregational Church which built a similar meeting house across the town green, while the First Parish congregation remained and became the First Parish in Milton, Unitarian-Universalist. Right after this, construction was done to the building, including rotating the front entrance to face Canton Avenue instead of the green. Other significant alterations were made as late as 1896.

The parish meets on Sunday at 10:30 am. There are education, youth, and music activities, as well as a strong suit in social activism.
