Te Time Out website (visit
link) has this to say about the restaurant:
"According to the menu at Rock & Sole
Plaice, London's third ever chippy opened on this site in 1871. Today, a jolly
fish with Union Jack bib and entertainer's cane presides over a green and white
frontage with several benches outside.
At lunchtimes, office workers and tourists tussle for custody of the couple of
tables on the ground floor, while takeaway customers place their orders at the
fryer. Below, the walls of a stuffy basement are decorated with a fading
submarine mural of strange smiling dolphins and teeth-gnashing sharks.
Any minor lack of comfort is worth enduring, though, as the food is good -
especially the fish. Delicate, flaky cod arrived encapsulated in a light, crisp
batter and was served with oversized, golden chips; other options (pies and
sausages) and sides (mushy peas, pickled onions) are at least equal to the
standard fare normally found in chip shops.
Prices exceed the norm, however, being pretty steep for food that is simply
plated up from the fryer."
Reading other review sites there seems to be a
slight leaning to the food and service being good but there are some folk that
have not had the best service.
