This village sign sits at the village road junction of
Aerodrome Road and School Road in the tiny hamlet of Paddlesworth. Hasted the
historian, wrote over two hundred years ago: “Padlesworth is the highest ground
and the lowest church in the whole county. It is a very small parish with only
three or four mean cottages, and the inhabitants are poor indeed.”
Inevitably that soon got changed by persons unknown to
"The highest ground, The lowest steeple, The ugliest parson, The poorest
people." However, the people of Paddlesworth decided on another version to adorn
their village sign, it now reads; "The highest ground, The lowest steeple, The
poorest parish, The fewest people". The words are set in a circle around
the sign showing a cat sitting at the start of the pathway to St Oswald's Church
with the spilt custard pot, the key is in reference to the fact the church key
is available at the Cat & Custard Pot pub.
