In 1951, the Memorial Anchor (Mindeankeret) was placed in this busy location and dedicated to the more than 1,700 sailors of the Danish Navy, Merchant Marine, or Allied Forces who died during World War II. It replaced a wooden cross erected on this spot in 1845. The Memorial Anchor dates from 1872 and was part of the Frigate Fyn (Funen), which was docked at Holmen Naval Base, in Copenhagen, during the Second World War.
The anchor is in the middle of a very popular meeting place in Copenhagen and serves as the backdrop for a wide variety of street performers. It is centered in a circle. Around the rim of the circle is inscribed the dedication. On May 5th, Denmark celebrated the end of World War II and its liberation from Nazi Germany with an official ceremony to honor and commemorate its fallen servicemen and servicewomen at the Mindeankeret.
The stamp was issued on 6 June 1984 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of D-Day, the allied landing in France at Normandy beaches.
