The El Fidel Hotel was built 1921-1923 on a site formerly occupied by a two-story wood frame hotel which had been built in the 1880s. Following World War I there was increased traffic along US Highway 85 and civic leaders secured pledges to building better accommodations for travelers along the highway. Originally built as "The Meadows Hotel" which opened in June 1923. In 1946 the hotel was purchased by Toufick Fidel of Albuquerque. He had much of the Spanish Colonial Revival cast stone decoration removed and renamed the hotel "El Fidel"

The building is in good condition and continues to serve as a hotel and restaurant.
