This marker is dedicated to the 89th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. 89th Illinois Infantry was organized at Chicago, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on August 27, 1862 and was nicknamed the "Railroad Regiment" due to the important role Chicago, Illinois based Railroad companies had in raising and filing the Regiments' roster. It marks their location on Sunday September 20, 1863 at 9:00 a.m. The commander of the 89th Illinois was Lieutenant Colonel Duncan J. Hall.

2'6" x 1'2" x 2'6" high rectangular slab of dark Quincy granite. Rock-faced sides; polished & inscribed front. "Illinois" is in large raised letters on beveled top. Marks unit's position at 9 a.m. on Sept. 20, 1863. a.m. FACE, BEVEL TOP GRANITE BLOCK
