During the Battle of Balaclava, James Yorke Scarlett led just 300 troops against a Russian force of 2,000 men and defeated them. This was a pre-cursor to the ill fated Charge of the Light Brigade.

After retiring James Scarlett involved himself in politics and stood for election to Parliament in Burnley in the 1868 general election. He was beaten by the Liberal candidate.
