The statue is strategically placed on the bench to accommodate the head height of most average people, although it was a struggle to stretch Female Dragontree. The diving helmet is realistically sculpted with weed waving around on the top.
On a more serious note, it was Whitstable harbour that was the first place to develop underwater breathing apparatus. The diving helmet was developed in the 1820's with the divers here being very successful. The nearby houses in Dollar Row, on Island Wall, were paid for with silver dollars salvaged by the Whitstable divers (as reported on Flickr) visit link
The divers from Whitstable travelled the world salvaging sunken ships, including the world famous Mary Rose.
