This marker is dedicated to the
85th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 85th Illinois Infantry was organized at Peoria, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on August 27, 1862.
It marks their location on Saturday, September 19, 1863. The commander of the 85th Illinois was Colonel Caleb J. Dilworth.

Marker contributes to national significance of park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans & related groups to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description
7'6" x 4'4" x 4'6" rock-faced monument consists of rectangular block of granite with an inscribed, polished front on a granite base. The tops of both pieces are beveled. Marks unit's position from 6:00 p.m. 9/18/1863 to 7:00 a.m. 9/19/1863.
Note: The date on the monument is Sept. 19, 1863, this text appears to be from the marker located outside of the park, rather than the text from the monument.
Long Physical Description
Monument is located in the Chickamauga Battlefield northwest on Reed's Bridge Road at map site #18.
