This marker is dedicated to the
85th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 85th Illinois Infantry was organized at Peoria, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on August 27, 1862.
It marks their location on Friday September 18, 1863 at 6:00 p.m. until Saturday, September 19, 1863 at 7:00 a.m.
The commander of the 85th Illinois was Colonel Caleb J. Dilworth.

Short Physical Description
2'6" x 1'2" x 2'6" high rectangular slab of dark Quincy granite. Rock-faced sides; polished & inscribed front. "Illinois" is in large raised letters on beveled top. Marks unit's position from 9/18/1863 at 6:00 p.m. to 9/19/1863 at 9:00 a.m.
Note: marker says 7 am rather than 9:00 am.
