This large War Department boundary stone is sited in
Maxwell Road at its junction with Garden Street in Brompton, Kent. The stone is
badly weathered and so any further visual identification is impossible. It sits
alongside land that was once the location of Holy Trinity Church, Brompton's
parish church, built in 1848 but demolished in
the early 1950's, which in turn had been land on which the former Garrison
Hospital had stood.
Maxwell Road was once part of Military Road, a communication road serving the
Chatham Lines and Forts. This road originally ran from St Mary's Island over in
the north and all the way to Fort Pitt over in the south. Nowadays, only one
small stretch of it retains that original name of Military Road, and is located
in Chatham town centre.
