This marker is dedicated to the
84th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 84th Illinois Infantry was organized at Quincy, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on September 1, 1862.
It marks their location on Sunday, September 20, 1863, from 8 am until 2 p.m. The commander of the 84th Illinois was Colonel Louis H. Waters.

Short Physical Description
2'6" x 1'2" x 2'6" high rectangular slab of dark Quincy granite. Rock-faced sides; polished & inscribed front. "Illinois" is in large raised letters on beveled top. Marks unit's position from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on 9/20/1863.
