This monument is dedicated to two Companies of the
79th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 79th Illinois Infantry was organized at Mattoon, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on August 28, 1862. It marks their location on Sunday, September 20, 1863, from 5 am until 5 p.m. The commander of the 79th Illinois was Colonel Allen Buckner.

Short Physical Description
2'6" x 1'2" x 2'6" high rectangular slab of dark Quincy granite. Rock-faced sides; polished & inscribed front. "Illinois" is in large raised letters on beveled top. Marks unit's position from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on 9/20/1863.
