"Die Pfarrkirche ist ein denkmalgeschütztes Kirchengebäude in Herdecke im Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis (Nordrhein-Westfalen).

Die Kirche ist die ehemalige Stiftskirche St. Marien im ehemaligen Kanonissenstift, das sich später freiweltliches Damenstift nannte. Der Überlieferung nach wurde das Stift im Jahr 819 von Frederuna, einer Verwandten Karls des Großen, gegründet. Aufgelöst wurde es 1811.

Im bestehenden Gebäude ist noch wesentliche Substanz der karolingischen Anlage aus dem 9. Jahrhundert erhalten. Die ursprünglich flach gedeckte, dreischiffige Pfeilerbasilika ist mit abgeschnürten Querhausarmen, drei parallelen Apsiden und einer doppelgeschossigen Vorhalle im Westen erbaut worden. In der zweiten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts wurden einschneidende bauliche Veränderungen vorgenommen - die Querhausarme wurden ebenso wie die Apsiden abgerissen und die Schiffe eingewölbt. 1908 wurden der Turm neu errichtet und die Gewölbe in den Westjochen des Mittelschiffes und der Seitenschiffe ausgeführt." - Quelle: Wikipedia
