On its way from south to north, the river Saar meets here the foothills from the Hunsrück, a low german mountain range. Thereby, it is a mountain that consists of a very hard quartzite.
Quartzite (from German Quarzit), not to be confused with the mineral quartz, is a hard, metamorphic rock which was originally sandstone. Sandstone is converted into quartzite through heating and pressure usually related to tectonic compression within organic belts.
Circumfluent the hard rock, the river Saar is obliged to carves a path, deep in the mountains. So it is flowing into north-west, building a big loop and is flowing back, almost parallel.
The two villages "Besseringen" and "Mettlach" are only 2 km far away in linear distance, but the river Saar needs nearly 10 km!
To log this waymark, please take a photo from (you in front of) the Saar river loop... and have fun!
You can leave your car at N 49° 30.160 E 006° 32.310.
