The 96th Illinois Infantry Monument is located along a hiking trail at Snodgrass Hill, tour stop 8, at the Chickamauga National Battlefield. The plaque on the back of the monument is missing. Parking is at N 34 55.624 W 85 16.262

This monument is dedicated to the 96th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 96th Illinois Infantry was organized at Rockford, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on September 6, 1862. Their commander, Colonel Thomas E. Champion.

Short Significance Description:

Marker contributes to national significance of park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans & related groups to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description

7'6" x 4'4" x 4'6" high rock-faced monument consisting of rectangular granite block with an inscribed polished front on granite base. The tops of both pieces are beveled. Marks unit's position on Snodgrass Hill.
