In San Francisco, 19th Avenue is the main N-S through road. Running parallel to 19th, about 4 blocks to the east is a hillside ridge. In places, this hillside is too steep for car traffic, so stairways are available to pedestrians to make the climb through the neighborhood.

One block south of Mandalay Lane is Quintara Street, an E-W street, where car traffic ends at 15th Avenue. These stairs climb the hillside to 14th Avenue, where car traffic resumes again. The stairway is shaped like an inverted Y, with the bottom of the stairway having two entrances a short distance apart. Each stairway climbs about 35 steps, where they come to a common landing. At this landing, a single stairway climbs the remaining 100 stairs to the top. at the top you are in the Golden Gate Heights neighborhood and adjacent to Golden Gate Heights Park.
