Brandon was founded by a railroad company to serve incoming settlers. Brandon is one of the first townships due to its proximity to Sioux Falls. Nels Graf built the first house in the township in 1873. The depot was the first building built and the post office was built later in 1878. The Norweigan Lutheran Church was built in 1883 and the first school in 1885. The schoolhouse was made of sod and cost 9$. It was located near the present site of Corson.
