Texas has a colorful history. It was its own independent Republic before joining the United States as a State. Then in 1861 it broke with the Union and joined with the Conderacy. This monument recognizes the soldiers from Texas who were part of a famous Confederate army unit known as Hood's Brigade. Brigader General John Bell Hood lead the brigade through most of its famous battles. At the start of the Civil War, the unit had between 3,500 to 4,400 troops. It sustained an estimated 61% casulty rate throughout its history and at the end, it had only 600 troops. The association of its veterans were loyal to its history and remembrance.
The monument itself is a tall granite base measuring 9 feet tall and 16'7" x 16'7" feet square. From the center of this base a tall tapering column rises up 44 feet. Inscriptions commemorating the brigade are on each of the four sides of the base. On top is a Confederate soldier, ready for battle with a rifle held in his right arm and his left hand on his left hip near his bayonet.
On the base, as copied from the SIRIS text describing the text and as shown in the photos, reads:
"(On front of base:) HOOD'S TEXAS BRIGADE, ARMY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA./CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA,/1861 TO 1865./FIRST TEXAS REGIMENT, FOURTH TEXAS REGIMENT,/FIFTH TEXAS REGIMENT,/EIGHTEENTH GEORGIA REGIMENT,/THIRD ARKANSAS REGIMENT,/HAMPTON'S SOUTH CAROLINA LEGION./BRIGADE COMMANDERS:/GENERAL JOHN B. HOOD,/GENERAL JEROME B. ROBERTSON,/GENERAL JOHN GREG./ERECTED BY SURVIVING COMRADES & FRIENDS/A.D. 1910/"HOOD'S TEXAS BRIGADE SHALL RETAIN/ITS ORIGINAL FORMATION AS LONG/AS THERE IS A MAN LEFT TO WAVE ITS FLAG."/PRESIDENT JEFFERSON DAVIS, C.S.A.
