Marker Name: St Norbert / Saint-Norbert Agency: The Historic Sites Advisory Board of Manitoba Languages: English, French Location: East of the small visitor centre St Norbert Provincial Heritage Park Turnbull Drive Marker Text: St. Norbert The first inhabitant of this region were former employees of the fur companies who settled here, with their Métis families, between 1822-1825. Their main occupation remained for many years the buffalo hunt and prairie freighting with Red River carts. In 1857 Monsignor Taché established here a parish which he named St. Norbert in honour of Monsignor Norbert Provencher, first bishop of St. Boniface. Louis Riel and Monsignor Ritchot organized the resistance movement of 1869-1870 in this community.
