The font has a sign which describes its history:
'THE FONT
1639
Demolished by the Puritans in 1641.
The fragments were secretly preserved
by William Somner
and re-assembled in 1660.'
ReQuest describes the details of the font: visit link
'The cover of the font is decorated with many carvings and symbols. These include Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, (the Gospel writers, who wrote down the life of Jesus), and a dove, a symbol of the Holy Spirit.
This font is no longer used for baptisms - today they take place in the Chapel of the Holy Innocents in the Crypt, which is smaller and more cozy for a family occasion like this.'
