In time he settled on the plains and built a sod house where he lived with his wife Anna. He also built a straw barn where he tethered his cow. Dangerous fires driven by fierce winds scorched the plains in the 1870's. A huge fire caught Peter Byg unaware on April 9, 1880. Trying to outrun an inferno, he rushed to the straw stable to rescue his cow but the flames from a fire engulfed him.
Peter is the first person buried in Benton Lutheran Church Cemetery and is in an unmarked grave.
