In Taunton, along Spring Street and to the south of the downtown section, is a river gauge that's part of the USGS network that report current conditions for waterways across the country.
The station is on the north side of Spring Street. The shed is made of galvanized steel and is shielded by a chain link fence on the pathway side and dark erosion control covering on the stream bank on the other side. The sensors are actually on the south side of Spring Street. You can trace the piping between the instruments and the shed.
The gauge measures flow and height. Data is available on the USGS web page for the gauge as far back as 2005.
The park where the gauge is located was opened in October 2011. The local newspaper web site has an article about the event. The park replaces an old car holding facility for the police. In addition to the sidkewalk that winds along the waterway, the park incorporates ways that storm water runoff from the parking lot is allowed to slowly enter the stream.
