In Taunton's downtown section, is the Taunton Public Library.

The library is located in a bi-colored building - light stone in the front, and brick in the rear. The front is the older section, which has several ornate details. The rear is an addition with little extra detail. The front entrance has a set of stairs that lead to the central door. The central door has ornate frieze-work around it, including a symbol of a book and the words, "Public Library." Two lamps are located on either side of the stairs. Across the very top are the words, "Bibliotheca Fons Eruditiontis."

The web site has a link that has a brief history of the library. The public library was formed in 1866 by combining three existing libraries and first existed in the old Bristol County Savings Bank Building. The library moved, in November 1904, to the present location at 12 Pleasant Street. This building was funded, in part, from the city of Taunton and a $70,000 gift from Andrew Carnegie.

The library provides services that are typical of public libraries, including a reference area, a children's area, access to museum passes, and, of course a book collection that can be checked out.

The Taunton Library is part of the SAILS Library Network, which includes 73 libraries for 40 communities in Southeastern Massachusetts.
