The photo is taken from a position approximately 15 metres north of the bridge.
The bridge is a brick construction arch bridge that carries the railway over a road. The rails, that are still in use, connect Waterloo and London Bridge stations.
Arch bridges, due to their constructed shape, do not have a consistent clearance above the road from one side to the other. This bridge has a clearance of 15' 3" between the white marks indicated on the arch (see photo). This means that large road vehicles may sometimes hit the bridge. In the event of that happening, there is a notice attached to the bridge, giving a phone number and bridge identification. This enables the unlucky road user to advise the rail network of his mishap.
The notice, for this bridge, reads:
"This is bridge 27 XTD
Gambia Street
between Waterloo East - London Bridge
In the event of any road vehicle striking the bridge please phone

as quickly as possible. The safety of trains may be affected."
