Although this is a popular pub name, I’ve no idea why this one has the name.
A crown and anchor is the badge of the Lord High Admiral, and is also the name of a naval gambling game. However being 36 miles inland Manchester has no real connection with the navy. It is connected to the coat at Liverpool by the Manchester Ship Canal, but this was built purely for commercial purposes.
Apparently the name is popular with retired seamen, perhaps that’s what happened here, but I can’t find any information to give me the real answer.
