This marker is dedicated to the
21st Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 21st Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Oshkosh, Wisconsin and mustered into Federal service September 5, 1862. This is one of two markers to the 21st Wisconsin Infantry on the battlefield. It marks their position at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 1863.

Short Significance Description:

Marker contributes to national significance of park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans & related groups to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description
A simple rectangular slab of granite measuring 1'6" x 1' x 3'. The slanted top carries a raised letter inscription. Marks unit's position at 11:00 a.m. on September 19, 1863.

Directions: I parked at the Winfrey Field on Brotherton Rd. There are several monuments along the north side of Winfrey Field. Take the path along the western edge of the field to the 33rd Ohio Infantry Regiment Marker. There is a second trail along the northern edge of the field, follow this path to the 93rd Ohio Infantry Regiment Monument. Just west of this monument, there is a trail leading in to the wooded area north of the Winfrey Field. Follow this path until it intersects another path at the Twenty-Fourth Illinois Infantry Marker. Head west to the clearing.
Note
Trailhead Graphics, Inc. has produced a map of the Chickamauga Battlefield showing the locations of all of the monuments and the markers on the battlefield. Each location on the map has a number associated with it that cross-references to an index on the back of the map that has the name of the marker (called the Chick-Chatt NMP monument numbering system). This number corresponds to the structure Number listed on the NPS List of Classified Structures that is normally prefixed with the letters MT for the Chickamauga Battlefield. This marker is not on the map since it is outside the park.
