Road of Trail Name: The Spanish Trail
State: Utah
County: Iron
Historical Significance: This was the route used by the Spanish to travel between Santa Fe, New Mexico and the Spanish settlements of California. After the Spanish were defeated in the Mexican War of 1847 much of this route was used by Mormons and other western pioneers.
Years in use: 50 years
How you discovered it: The Spanish Trail is well known thoughout the West for its significance in the settlement of this part of the country. Happened across this particular marker while travelling on Highway 56.
Why?: The Spanish Trail was primarily used by people and pack mules. Later, portions were used as wagon roads to haul goods between settlements.
Directions: This marker is on the south side of Utah Highway 56, just east of the junction with 600 East on the eastern edge of New Castle, Utah.
