This marker is dedicated to 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 31st Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio and mustered in on August 4, 1861. This is one of three markers to the 31st Ohio Infantry on the battlefield. It marks their location at from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Sept. 19, 1863.

The monument to the 31st Ohio Infantry located on Poe Road provides the folloing information:

31st Regiment Ohio Infantry
Sept. 19th, 1863, about 10 A.M. this Regiment, Lieut. Col. Frederick W. Lister commanding, was sent to reinforce Croxton’s Brigade, then engaged near Jay's Mill, and went into action on the left of the brigade. It afterward about 11:00 AM took part in the recapture of the 4th Indiana battery, and continued in action till about 2:00 PM.
Sept. 20th, occupy this position till about 12:00 M., when the enemy penetrated our lines to the right of this position, and the regiment was broken and forced to retire. The attachments of the regiment under Captains J.A. Cahill and J.H. McCune, and Lieutenants Eli Wilkins, A.S. Scott and J.J. Miller were rallied and fought on Snodgrass Hill until the close of the battle.
Lose, killed 13; wounded 134; captured or missing 22.

Monument contributes to nat'l significance of the park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description
A 1'6" x 1'6" x 3' high granite obelisk with a raised letter inscription. Marks regiment's position east of the headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Artillery on September 19, 1863, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
