Hugh Seymour Walpole was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on March 13, 1884. He was educated at King’s College, Canterbury, and Emanuel College, Cambridge.

His first successful novel was Mr Perrin and Mr Trail published in 1911, followed by Fortitude, published in 1913. During World War I Walpole worked in Russia, first with the Red Cross, for which he was awarded the Russian Georgian Cross, and latterly as head of the Anglo-Russian Propaganda Bureau. Whilst there his experiences in Russia led to his two novels The Dark Forest and The Secret City, the latter being awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. His most successful novels were written in the early 1930s, in particular a four part series covering two hundred years of English social history: Rogue Herries, Judith Paris, The Fortress, and Vanessa.

He was made a CBE in 1918 and in 1937 he was knighted. In addition to prodigious novel writing, Walpole also wrote short stories, critical studies, and plays; wrote film scripts and enjoyed great success lecturing in the United States and Britain. Walpole died at his home, Brackenburn, in the Lake District, on June 1, 1941.
