In October 1948, Ansel Adams traveled to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to take photographs of US national parks for a Guggenheim Fellowship. The Knoxville Museum of Art currently has an exhibit (link) displaying on-line the 47 photographs created on that trip for educational purposes.

This photograph is simply labeled “AT CADES COVE”, so the challenge is lining up the natural scenery. This image matches the view along Sparks Lane, which is still a gravel road with a bridgeless stream crossing. The view is to the southeast with Thunderhead Mountain in the background. The split rail fence has been replaced with more modern barbed wire. The small tree in the field is gone, but trees can still be seen lining the Cooper Branch stream.

Come, enjoy the scenery, and admire what Ansel Adams saw back in 1948 in this national park…
