The figures appear to be alluding to the classical period of Rome or Greece.

This is reinforced by the inclusion of laurel wreaths.
In Greece laurel wreaths were awarded as prizes in the Pythian games, a forerunner of the Olympic games. Laurel wreaths are also associated with the word Baccalaureate and of poet laureate.

The left hand figure is involved in the act of sculpture, whilst the right hand one has an artist’s palette on her arm.

This college building opened in 1903 and the mosaic was designed by Gerald E.Moira and made by Rust’s Vitreous Mosaic Company.
