This centre point for conspicuous consumption is located just a little to the west of the backpacker area of central HCMC. 'Penguins' by name, its speciality is frozen yogurt (in lots of different flavours). You enter at the ground floor, fill a bucket with frozen milk, add sugary things on top (I don't even know what half of them are), and ascend via a staircase to the two upper floors. The price is around 100,000 Dong = $5. Cool.
Here, it is not Marx and Engels, but Apple versus Android, as the young HCMC elite type away, to a backdrop of sub-titled US movies, loud music, amidst a colourful environment of paintings oriented around a penguin motif and crispy cold aircon. Strangely, I liked it. Don't know what Uncle Ho would say. Nothing like this in 1994. O, yes—with wifi, free.
