This World War I memorial is an old monument, the oldest in Evansville. It was erected in 1926, a mere 8 years after the end of the war. Most memorials in Evansville are newer and more modern.
The memorial was placed by the Service Star Legion War Mothers
Gresham Chapter. The "Gresham Chapter" is named after Corp. James Bethal Gresham, the first American casualty in the war who was from Evansville. He was killed in France, which is all stated on the memorial. Not only was the monument put up for Corp. Gresham, but for all "Vanderburgh County boys who gave their lives" during the war.
