The building at this address is a contributing building to the East Ave Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was built in 1816, and was relocated from Culver and University in 1906. Was the hitching post there before the building, or installed after the building moved? The days of horse and buggy were nearly over by then, so the latter seems unlikely. The NRHP description says that the building was moved to the original Culver Estate, but doesn't describe what that was, or what other structures might have been there before this building was located here. Something to think about.
