Located at the northeast side of Tom McCall Point, Rowena Gap is one of many hydraulic dams encountered by the Missoula Ice Age Floods. The gap formed where the river cuts through the Columbia Hills anticline. The bottleneck piled up waters from the floods to heights reaching 1,000 feet. Flood waters backed up from Rowena Gap to as far away as present day Maryhill Museum (about 18 miles as the crow flies). As the Missoula floods exited The Dalles basin, they eroded the Columbia River Basin at river level, forming the scabland visible along the freeway, and also etching a prominent trimline on the southwest flank of the Columbia Hills anticline at about 1030±40 feet, descending to about 950±40 feet where flow entered the constriction (adapted from Jim O’Connor and Richard Waitt, Field Trip of IAFI, 2007).
