The Woods County Courthouse was built in 1956 replacing a much more elaborate Victorian style courthouse built 1904. Woods County is named for Samuel Newitt Wood, a renowned Kansas politician. The county seat Alva was named after Alva Adams, railroad attorney, who later was governor of the State of Colorado. The county was formed at Oklahoma statehood from a portion of Woods County Oklahoma Territory.
