Forest Park is one of the nations largest municipal parks. It is located in the middle of an urban area on the Atlantic Flyway. Fredrick Law Olmsted designed the park to take advantage of the Pecousic Brook that flows through the south part of the park. Dams create a series of lakes that range in size. The park attracts a large variety of migrating and resident waterfowl, shorebirds and land birds.

An observation deck is located at the east end of the Duck Pond. It's a popular place for residents to come and feed the ducks and geese. Just beyond the deck, in the pond, is a large sign informing visitors of what they can expect to see. Pictures of each species as well as their physical description and habitat is described in sufficient detail to make the sometimes difficult task of bird identification easier.

The sign has images and information about the following birds:

Wood Duck
Mallard
Northern Pintail
Canada Goose
Great Egret
Great Blue Heron
Herring Gull
Belted Kingfisher
Common Merganser
Black Duck

Other shorebirds listed by not depicted are: Muscovy, Grebe, Loon, Egyptian Goose, Gadwall, Bittern, and Call Duck.
