Martello Towers were built along the coast of East Sussex and Kent as a defence against the French during 1793 to 1815.

This Martello Tower was constructed in 1806 and is a brick design covered in a concrete render. It is approximately 30 feet high and has walls about 6ft thick. Inside there is a central brick pillar which features vaulted arches. Originally the ground floor was where the magazine store was located and the first and second floors were the living quarters.
The tower has been Grade II Listed since 23rd April 1985.
Martello Tower No. 23 has been converted into a home with windows on the top to take advantage of the sea views. It featured on the television series called World's Most Extreme Homes and can be seen on this YouTube clip: visit link
