Pioneer photographer William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) accompanied the 1871 U.S. Territorial Survey Expedition led by Dr. F.V. Hayden. Jackson’s remarkable photographs made the tales of the American West a visual reality. The Hayden Survey Report, with Jackson’s photographs, convinced Congress to make Yellowstone the first national park 18 1872.
Jackson was the first to photograph the Teton Range, while exploring the west side in 1872. In photo to left, Jackson prepares his camera on a high cliff while his assistant steadies the darkroom tent. Because photographs had to be developed on site, Jackson packed glass plates and chemicals across the West.
A New Science Records an Ancient Landscape.
Jackson took the above photograph in 1878 from Signal Mountain. Compare today’s view with Jackson’s and note the charred slopes and lingering smoke in his photo. This picture documents the natural cycle of fire and regrowth.
