Quick Description: Lord Roberts commanded British forces in Afghanistan in 1881-1882. He was later to become the Commander-in-Chief in India (1885-1893), in the South African War (1899-1902) and, finally Commander-in-Chief of the British Army (1901-1904).

Long Description:
This 1924 sculpture by Henry Poole is actually one of two replicas of a work by Harry Bates. The original was made 1894-8 and Poole worked as Bates appentice at that time. The life-sized bronze work portrays Roberts in full military uniform astride a horse. The stone plinth is about 8 feet high and bears the simple inscriptions "ROBERTS".
The piece is located on the southeast corner of the Horse Guards Parade in London.

"Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, Bt, VC, KG, KP, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCIE, KStJ, PC (30 September 1832 – 14 November 1914) was a distinguished Indian born[1] British soldier who regarded himself as Anglo-Irish[2] and one of the most successful British commanders of the 19th century. He served in the Indian rebellion, the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War before leading British Forces to success in the Second Boer War. He also became the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces before the post was abolished in 1904...
