Bron’ka Castle

The castle in Bron’ka was first mentioned in 1273 in the annals of Hungarian King Laszlo IV about the enemies of his father King Stephen V who built the castle.

From the castle the legendary knight Brynda led a company of bandits that terrorized the surrounding villages. His white horse was said to have only three legs but was still so fast that no horse could ever overtake him. Brynda applied his horseshoes on backwards to prevent being tracked. The castle had a large courtyard with underground tunnels where Brynda and his companions hid their wealth.

One day the villagers devised a plan to rid this menace from their midst. The people from all the surrounding villages gathered below the castle with their livestock: sheep, goats, cows and oxen, pigs, turkey, ducks, geese and chickens. At midnight they lit torches on the horns of each bull and excited all the animals to make a ruckus. Brynda awoke startled by all the noise and seeing all the torches thought a huge army had assembled to attack. He fled the castle with his wife, followed closely by his comrades. The villagers then entered the empty castle and dismantled it stone by stone.

Even today when the moon is full, the people of Bron’ka claim they can see the ghost of Brynda riding on his white horse at the stroke of midnight.
