As well as servicing the town, it is the junction of the line to the industrial facilities at Wollongong on the coast. High speed passenger trains run by CountryLink (the XPT & Xplorer) stop here on their way to Canberra & Griffith.
The station opened on 2 December 1867 as Sutton Forest, changing its name to Moss Vale in 1877. It is quite unusual in that it features a very wide island platform. It has retained its historical connection with original seating, signs & artifacts.
