Sea Girt was incorporated in 1917. The town was land owned by John Sherman and was mainly farming land. In 1887 the New Jersey National Guard purchased 120 acres of land to use as a training camp. It is still used today. Sea Girt was primarily a vacation residential area and over the years has grown into a small community.
