The complex of the Minorite / Franciscan monastery (Minoritský / františkánský klášter) with preserved Gothic core, nowadays seat of the Southmoravian Museum in Znojmo (Jihomoravské muzeum ve Znojme), is one of many valuable buildings in town Znojmo.
The structure of the Minorite origin, later a Franciscan monastery, was built during the course of the 13th century. In 1270–1297, after the tragic Battle on the Marchfeld (Moravske pole), the monastery served as a burial place for body of Czech king Premysl Otakar II. The monastery was taken over by the Franciscans in 1534 - they later renovated the whole complex, primarily its first floor. In 1780 Emperor Joseph II. closed the monastery and a part of the building was transformed into a military training school. Radical reconstruction of the abandoned monastery into a prison took place in 1825. Finally, the complex of the Franciscan monastery has served for museum (Jihomoravské Muzeum) purposes since 1949.
