It is located in close proximity to Miller Park. Unveiled in 2002, Tree of Life is constructed out of recycled steel from industry processes. It stands 2½ stories tall, and is brightly painted. White intended for the sculpture to become a place for Milwaukee locals to gather and forge new community ties.
Nancy Metz White born in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1934, graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a bachelor’s degree in art education and also did graduate study there. White uses brightly painted welded steel and forge flashings recycled from Milwaukee heavy industry to produce colorful tree forms. Bird forms perch amid the tree branches, adding a fanciful touch.
